For the first time since he’s joined the Jaguars 51 games ago, Trevor Lawrence will not be Jacksonville’s starting QB when they host Carolina in week 17. C.J. Beathard gets the nod hoping to end the team’s four game losing streak and with an outside chance to win the AFC South. Carolina (2-13) is coming off their best two game stretch of the season, beating Atlanta and almost upsetting Green Bay so the Panthers are looking to continue that momentum.

Carolina edged Atlanta 9-7 in week 15 and nearly pulled off the upset over Green Bay before falling 33-30 on a 32-yard field goal with 0:19 left. QB Bryce Young threw for 312 yards vs the Packers and didn’t throw an INT as the Panthers are showing no quit down the stretch despite being 2-13. It also doesn’t benefit Carolina to tank late in the season considering the Bears own their #1 pick as part of last year’s trade for Young.
Both of the Panthers close games the last two weeks were at home, as was their win over Houston in week 8 so Carolina has posted an 0-8 mark on the road this season. Jacksonville’s four game losing streak has come in OT vs Cincinnati, and then against the Browns, Ravens, and Bucs who are all surging towards the postseason.
Jacksonville has run a pretty tough gauntlet during their losing streak, but that gets remedied at home against the team with the fewest wins in the league. The problems in the Panthers vs Jacksonville matchup is that a) Lawrence is out and Beathard has thrown 29 passes all season and b) the Jaguars are actually horrible at home at 2-5.
