It is a huge week in the Champions League, and it will be particularly massive for 2018 winners Real Madrid. The Spanish side will be looking to avoid failing to make it out of the group stage for the first time in their history, but only a win against Borussia Monchengladbach will achieve that.

Madrid Hoping To Avoid Embarrassment

It is a huge week for Zindine Zidane and his side, as they look to avoid becoming the first Real Madrid side ever to fail to make it through the group stages of the Champions League. Their mission this week is simple, as they must win at all costs to avoid relying on results from elsewhere. Madrid have won just two games in the competition this season, and have failed to beat any other side except Inter Milan, who also still have hopes of progression themselves.

Zidane would have been most alarmed by the number of goals that his side have conceded in the competition so far this season, as they have conceded nine goals in the five games that they have played. They were beaten in their most recent game by Shakhtar Donetsk, who ensured that Real enter the final matchday in third spot. Dropping into the Europa League would be considered the ultimate embarrassment for the record-breaking European champions, but that is something that could be their destiny if they aren’t able to take maximum point against the current group leaders.

Monchengladbach Trying To Get over The Line

Borussia Monchengladbach have been the standout team in Group B of the Champions League so far. They come into this final round of games as the leaders, which not many people would have seen coming after they were drawn against Real Madrid and Inter Milan in this testing group. Monchengladbach have been beaten on just one occasion so far in the competition, with that defeat coming against Inter Milan last time out. They were unfortunate to lose that game, as they believed that they had a perfectly good equalising goal disallowed in the final stages of the game.

The point would have been a massive result for the German side, but the defeat means that there is still work to do. Monchengladbach will need at least a point from this game to progress, which could also be enough for Madrid to qualify should Inter beat Shakhtar in the other game in the group on Wednesday night. However, there is nothing about this Monchengladbach side that would indicate that they are willing to sit back and accept a point.

Real Madrid vs Borussia Monchengladbach Picks

Monchengladbach will still be considered the underdogs to progress from this group despite holding top spot. However, they have shown throughout the competition so far that they are able to attack the very best teams, and they would have taken confidence from the 2-2 draw that they got against Real Madrid on matchday two. We expect another draw on Wednesday.
