Tottenham Hotspur have wasted little time in announcing Mauricio Pochettino’s replacement in North London. The man that will take over the realms is no stranger to the Premier League, but the news would have come as a surprise to most.

Jose Mourinho will take over at Spurs, and his first match will be against West Ham United on Saturday afternoon. The Portuguese manager has been out of work since being fired from Manchester United in December 2018.

He has constantly reiterated that he wanted to return to the game and it would seem that the offer at Spurs was just too good to turn down. The announcement came less than 24 hours after it was revealed that Pochettino would be leaving the club.

Pochettino Success Story

Pochettino did an excellent job at Tottenham after arriving from Southampton, and that was epitomised with the club reaching the Champions League final for the very first time in June. However, league form has been poor throughout 2018 as they have only recorded 23 points since February.

He will go down as one of the best Tottenham managers in the Premier League era and has ensured that club their place among Europe’s elite. Before the Argentinean’s arrival, the club only finished in the Champions League places on two occasions in 25 years. However, since Pochettino has been in charge, they have qualified in four of the five seasons.

Mourinho’s Winning Mentality

The factor that was ultimately the downfall for Pochettino was his lack of winning ability when the pressure was on. During his tenure, they crashed out at the semi-final stage of the FA Cup and lost the Champions League final. As well as this, they were also unable to chase down Leicester City in their famous title-winning campaign.

The one main strength that Mourinho has is being able to get the job done and deliver silverware. If he can do that at Spurs, then he would be an instant success. If his track record is anything to go by, then it would seem that success should follow the Portuguese.

Even during his ill-fated period in charge of United, he was still able to deliver the League Cup and Europa League. He was won domestic honours in England, Spain, Italy and Portugal throughout his career, and that would be exciting for Spurs fans.

Potential Problems For Jose

No job is without its complications, and that is especially the case with this one for Mourinho. There have already been questions surrounding the potential relationship between Mourinho and Daniel Levy. Levy famously fell out with Pochettino over the summer months as he failed to bring in the players that the Argentine wanted at the club.

The two have massive egos, and that could be a potential problem should they fall out. Mourinho will expect to have money to spend in the winter transfer window in order to make this Spurs side competitive.

It is difficult to assess how this will play out at present, but it will certainly be something that all football fans will be watching carefully.
