Peralta Has Not Been the Ace He Was Expected To Be
The Mets are trying to win consistently and get back to .500. Similarly, would-be ace Freddy Peralta would like to become the consistent top-tier starter the team expected when it acquired him in the offseason.
His overall numbers are respectable enough, but that's not looking at the entire picture. He throws too many pitches and can generally only be trusted for 5 or 6 innings at most. He has a 0.7 bWAR and a 3.55 ERA. In 66 innings, he's allowed 58 hits and 26 earned runs, walking 28 and striking out 68. He's allowed 8 homers.
At the plate, until the Mets start hitting, they'll continue to be streaky and have trouble getting back into contention. The only healthy regular with a respectable OPS is Juan Soto, which is what he's supposed to do. Mark Vientos, Marcus Semien, Bo Bichette, and Carson Benge are under .700.
Against M's starter George Kirby, Bichette is 2 for 7 with a double and a home run. Semien is 4 for 27 with 2 doubles and a home run. Vientos is 2 for 2 with a home run. MJ Melendez is 2 for 9 with a double. Soto is 3 for 4 with 3 singles.
Kirby and the M's Starters Have Carried the Team to 1st Place
Like Peralta, George Kirby's season-long numbers are solid enough, but he struggled in his last start. Against the Diamondbacks, he allowed 6 hits and 4 earned runs in 5.1 innings. Two starts ago, against the Padres, he gave up 6 earned runs in 5.2 innings.
For the season, he has a 0.8 bWAR and a 3.77 ERA. In 12 starts, he's thrown 74 innings and allowed an American League-leading 73 hits. He's surrendered 31 earned runs, walked 17, and struck out 59.
Seattle's batters' team OPS isn't much better than the Mets', but they hit the ball out of the park. And they've had a hot streak and are hitting homers without star catcher Cal Raleigh, on the injured list with an oblique strain. Both Julio Rodriguez and Luke Raley are in double-digits in homers. Randy Arozarena has an OPS above .800.
For the Mariners against Peralta, Josh Naylor is 2 for 9 with a home run. Victor Robles is 2 for 4 with a double. J.P. Crawford is 1 for 3 with a single. Patrick Wisdom is 1 for 8 with a single, 2 walks, and 4 K's. Mitch Garver is 1 for 5 with a double. Raley is 0 for 4 with 2 K's. Arozarena is 0 for 6.
Mets vs Mariners
Both teams' starters are expected to be near the top of MLB but have had some tough games recently. Since T-Mobile Park is a pitcher's park, expect a low-scoring game.
Peralta has handled the M's hitters well enough in the past. The Mets have had some moderate success with pop against Kirby. New York should come out on top in this afternoon affair and beat Seattle.
