Learn How to Read MLS Betting Odds

MLS Odds are shown in three different ways:

American
Decimal
Fractional

Each of these football soccer odds has its specifics, and we are here to explain all you need to know to function properly and have successful betting.

American MLS Betting Odds

These odds go with the top tier of US soccer. American odds for American football are logical on some level. However, some people don’t live in the States but often bet on MLS.

These Major League soccer odds are also called moneylines.

What are the two rules you need to know here:

Negative odds are marking favorites or outcomes with higher probabilities of happening.
Everything revolves around $100.

Here is an example to start with:

In this example, the favorite is Inter Miami, and the higher the number, the bigger the favorites.
It is the opposite in the case of positive odds. The bigger the number, the less likely that bet will happen. The example shows that a draw at +200 has the slightest chance of occurring.

To understand how to calculate profits in betting, it’s essential to know that everything revolves around $100.

If the moneyline is negative, it means that you’re betting on the favorite team, and the value shows how much money you need to wager to win $100. For instance, in this case, if you bet on Inter, you’d need to stake $150 to win $100.
On the other hand, if you bet on the underdog team, Austin FC, and the moneyline is positive, the value indicates how much profit you’d make if you bet $100. In this case, your clean profit would be $180.

There are situations when you have two or more positive or negative odds, like when the MLS betting lines show the spread.

Spreads are introduced to level the odds. Inter is stronger than Austin FC, so the bookies are adding a 1.5-goal spread here.

Inter -1.5 -110
Austin FC +1.5 -110

It means that Inter needs to cover that spread, which, in simple words, means they have to beat Austin by at least a two-goal margin.

On the other side, Austin can afford to lose by one goal, and betting on them would still be successful.

Decimal MLS Betting Odds

The decimal format is the most commonly used method for presenting odds. In decimal odds, the odds are presented as a decimal number, which represents the total payout a bettor will receive, including their original stake, for every unit wagered.
For example, if the odds are 2.50, a bettor would receive a total payout of 2.50 times their original stake if their bet wins.

Here’s an example:

Minnesota United	3.50

In this case, LA FC appears to be the obvious favorite, as their odds are presented with the lowest number.

It’s worth noting that odds are typically represented as a decimal or a fraction, and the closer the odds are to the number one, the bigger the favorite that team is considered to be.

On the other hand, Minnesota United is currently at 3.50 odds, which means that they are seen as less likely to win the match.

It’s important to remember that the higher the odds, the more unrealistic the chances of that team winning are perceived to be.

When calculating profits using decimal odds, the process differs from that of moneylines. However, the formula is relatively straightforward and can be broken down into two parts:

Multiply the stake by the odds.
Subtract the total stake from the overall winnings.

To illustrate, let’s say we’re placing a $100 bet on LA FC to win at odds of 1.40.

Step one:

$100 x 1.40 = $140

Step two:

$140 – $100 = $40. This is our profit.

Fractional MLS Betting Odds

The last Major League Soccer betting odds that need to be explained are fractional.

This way of presenting the odds is dominant in the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth, meaning it covers a massive area. We always say that MLS fractional odds look more complex than they really are.

A simple fraction is constructed from the first number numerator and the second denominator.

Here is an example:

How to read these fractional odds?

The numerator in Columbus fraction is 3, and the denominator is 5.

If the numerator is less than the denominator, then the team is favored, and the outcome is more probable.
Contrary to that, the greater the numerator is compared to the denominator, those picks have a lower chance of turning out as winning.

The formula for calculating the profits is pretty straightforward.

Step one: Multiply the numerator by the stakes.
Step two: Divide that sum by the denominator.

Let’s say we bet $100 on Columbus (odds:3/5).

Step one: $100×3=$300
Step two: $300/5=$60

The result is a clean profit, so there aren’t any other steps in the process.
