Mahrez, Amoura, and Algeria's Best Chance in 12 Years
Riyad Mahrez is 35 and captaining Algeria at his fourth World Cup with 113 caps and 38 international goals. He plays for Al-Ahli in Saudi Arabia and continues to perform at a level that makes him Algeria's most dangerous player in any match. Mohamed Amoura finished the 2026 qualifying campaign as the top African scorer. He arrives from Wolfsburg with the form to back it up. Ibrahim Maza adds creative quality from Bayer Leverkusen and represents the next generation of Algerian talent. Ramy Bensebaini provides attacking threat from left back, overlapping from Borussia Dortmund with the energy of a winger in a defender's position.
Bennacer was left out of the squad entirely. No official reason given. The AC Milan midfielder's absence removes the defensive-midfield structure Algeria depended on, and Petkovic's 4-3-3 will need to compensate for his ball-winning presence in the center. Algeria's best World Cup result was the 2014 round of 16, where they pushed eventual champions Germany to extra time. This squad has the quality to reach that standard again.

Rangnick's Gegenpress Meets Its Match
Ralf Rangnick has managed Austria since 2022 and transformed them into one of Europe's most physically intense pressing sides. David Alaba missed Euro 2024 through injury but is fully fit here, bringing Real Madrid experience and the versatility to play anywhere across the back line. Marcel Sabitzer leads from midfield, arriving off a strong season with Borussia Dortmund. Konrad Laimer adds relentless energy from the right. Marko Arnautovic leads the line at 37, still the reference point for Austria's attacking play despite his age.
Austria's gegenpress works when the opposition can't handle the tempo. Algeria have the technical quality in the final third to play through a press; Mahrez drifts into pockets, Amoura holds and links, and Maza finds space between the lines. The question is whether Algeria's midfield without Bennacer can sustain that quality for 90 minutes against a Rangnick side that runs until the final whistle. Austria's structural discipline is the edge. Algeria's individual quality is the counterargument.
Algeria vs. Austria Pick
Rangnick's pressing system against an Algeria midfield that lost its defensive anchor without Bennacer. Austria are more reliable as a unit and their gegenpress has been the most consistent tactical system in this group. Mahrez can change the game in one moment, but Austria controls enough of them. We're backing Austria -125.
