Sonny Gray Returns to the Bronx, Where He Did Not Fit
Sonny Gray spent a season-and-a-half in Yankees pinstripes and did not have a good experience. In 41 appearances (34 starts), he posted a 4.51 ERA, allowed 193 hits in 195.2 innings, and gave up 98 earned runs. He clashed with the pitching coach and the front office on how to use his repertoire, and by the end of his time there, New York GM Brian Cashman openly said he was going to get Gray out of town.
Since then, he reinvigorated his career with the Reds, Twins, Cardinals, and now the Red Sox. So far this season, he has a 0.6 bWAR, a 6-1 record, and a 3.06 ERA. In 10 starts, he's tossed 50 innings, allowed 46 hits, and 17 earned runs, walking 14 and striking out 41.
The BoSox are coming off a series loss to the Orioles at home.
They are still waiting for their offense to kick it into gear. Apart from Willson Contreras, Wilyer Abreu, and Ceddanne Rafaela, they have not hit. It appeared as if Caleb Durbin and Jarren Duran were coming out of their funk, but they quickly fell back again.
Against Yankees starter Ryan Weathers, Contreras is 3 for 9 with 2 doubles and a home run. Isiah Kiner-Falefa is 1 for 1 with a home run. Andruw Monasterio is 1 for 3 with a home run.
2 of Ryan Weathers' Last 3 Starts Have Been Shaky
In his first year as a Yankee, Ryan Weathers has shown flashes of excellence, but has also been knocked around. In two of his last three starts, he's given up 5 earned runs. They sandwich a start against the Rays in which he threw 7 shutout innings.
For the season, he has a 1.1 bWAR and a 3.52 ERA. In 11 starts and 64 innings, he's allowed 54 hits and 25 earned runs, walking 19 and striking out 75.
Aaron Judge remains out as he waits for a prognosis on his stress fracture in his ribs. Ben Rice has been carrying the team offensively in his stead with a 1.031 OPS and 17 homers. Ryan McMahon had the game-winning hit in the win over the Guardians and his average is finally over .200. Anthony Volpe is struggling after a fast start and his average is down to .220.
The Yankees salvaged the final game of their 3-game set with the Guardians.

For the Bombers against Gray, Rice is 1 for 2 with a home run. Amed Rosario is 6 for 22, all singles. Cody Bellinger is 3 for 10 with a double. Jazz Chisholm Jr. is 3 for 7 with a triple. Paul Goldschmidt is 1 for 23 with a double.
Red Sox vs Yankees Pick
The rivalry between the Red Sox and Yankees will never die, regardless of how good or bad the teams are at a particular time. However, it does reduce the excitement when New York is again near the top of the division and Boston is having a bad season.
This pitching matchup is relatively even. Weathers has not been great recently and Gray is generally reliable. In something of an upset, the BoSox will come out on top in this one, sparking another bout of excitement that maybe they're getting their season turned around.
