The 79th edition of the Vuelta a Espana gets underway on August 17, with the action in the final Grand Tour event of 2024 being staged up until September 8. An exciting event in the competition is likely this weekend, as cyclists are back in action on the roads following the Olympics in Paris. But, which rider will claim the top prize in the Vuelta a Espana this year?

Before Betting On Vuelta a Espana

The 2024 edition of the Vuelta a Espana gets underway on Saturday, August 17, with the best cyclists in the world in action during the three-week event across Portugal and Spain. This year’s competition gets underway in Lisbon, before the winner will be crowned following the final stage in Madrid. It forms the final leg of the Grand Tour, following the Giro d’Italia and the Tour de France.

There will be a slightly underwhelming feel surrounding the Vuelta a Espana this year, as Tadej Pogacar will not be involved in the competition after winning the opening two legs of the Grand Tour this season. The Slovenian could have become the first rider to ever win all three legs of the series in history, but there will be no bid for history in 2024.

Therefore, his absence opens an opportunity for many of the riders that have been forced to play second fiddle throughout the 2024 campaign. Primoz Roglic could the rider that ticks the most boxes when assessing the leading contenders after winning the Vuelta a Espana on three previous occasions. The former world number one is a high-quality performer on Grand Tours, evident from his win in the Giro d’Italia last year.

American rider Sepp Kuss could also be a leading contender, as he is one of few competitors to have finished in the top three places in all Grand Tours during the same season. The 29-year-old comes into the Vuelta a Espana as the defending champion this year, becoming the first American since Chris Horner to win a Grand Tour event.

Roglic’s dominance in this event can’t be overlooked in recent history, but at the prices, he could be worth taking on this year. Mikel Landa could be worth taking a chance on, as he will be leading the Soudal-Quick Step team. He finished fifth at the Tour de France earlier this year, and he will be cheered on by a passionate home support. Landa’s previous best showing at the Vuelta a Espana came last year when he finished fifth.
