Before Betting on the Champions League
It has been a long wait for Aston Villa to re-join Europe’s elite, but the day that all fans have been waiting for since 1982-83 arrives on Tuesday when Unai Emery’s side make their debut in the Champions League. The Villa are former European champions, previously winning the top prize in Europe in 1981-82.
However, they haven’t achieved European qualification since playing in the Europa League for a third successive campaign under Gérard Houllier in 2010-11. Since then, the Midlands giants have played in the second tier in England, and have made a gradual climb back to the top level of the English game.
But, the appointment of Emery has transformed their fortunes, and they were the surprise package in England last term after achieving a top-four finish above Tottenham, Chelsea, and Man United. Building on that promise is now the big challenge for the Villa, but the initial signs are promising after winning two of their opening three matches in the Premier League this term.
Swiss side Young Boys will have the home field advantage for this opening match in the Champions League this term. Their previous best showing in the competition came back in 1958-59 when they reached the semi-final stage. However, they have won just 19 of their 62 matches in the Champions League.
This will be their second consecutive appearance in the competition. Last term, they finished third in a competitive group, which also included Man City and RB Leipzig, before being eliminated in the playoff round of the Europa League by Sporting Lisbon.
However, they should present a tough opening day challenge for Villa after impressing in the playoff round of the Champions League this term after knocking out Galatasaray after recording wins at home and away against the Turkish club.
