New Format

The new Champions League campaign brings with it a whole new format that fans will need to understand before the competition gets underway. Unlike previous campaigns when 32 teams have been drawn in eight groups, the new season will see a total of 36 teams involved, with the opening round of the competition proper being formatted in a single-league format.

Each team involved will be drawn against eight different opponents, with teams playing once at home and once away at each rival that they are drawn alongside. Unlike previous seasons, teams won’t be facing the same rival in home and away matches. The top eight teams from the first phase will automatically book their spot in the round of 16.

Meanwhile, the teams that finish between ninth and 24th will drop into a two-legged playoff, with the winners from these progressing throughout to the next round. The bottom eight teams in the league phase will be eliminated from Europe altogether.
