Bruno Fernandes will be available for Manchester United’s next three Premier League games after the straight red card he received against Tottenham was overturned.
The 30-year-old midfielder was sent off during last weekend’s 3-0 home defeat for a poorly timed tackle on James Maddison.
Although Fernandes’ challenge wasn’t overly aggressive, the midfielder did catch Maddison, forcing referee Chris Kavanagh into a tough decision.
The official was quick to brandish a straight red card with VAR (video assistant referee) refusing to overturn the on-field decision.
Consequently, with United’s number eight sent packing and Ange Postecoglou’s side going on to take all three points thanks to goals from Brennan Johnson, Dejan Kulusevski, and Dominic Solanke, pressure on Erik Ten Hag has risen to an almost unbearable level.
Erik Ten Hag Receives Bruno Fernandes Boost
The Dutchman’s job is at risk, and failure to bounce back with a win against Porto in the Europa League could result in United’s board being left with no choice but to dismiss him.
However, a glimmer of hope has been offered to the former Ajax manager after United successfully appealed Fernandes’ domestic red card. The Red Devils won their case with the English FA recently confirming the Portugal international will be available for his side’s next three games, including Sunday’s away trip to Aston Villa.
Fernandes will also be available for United’s home game against Brentford (Oct 19) before the side travel to West Ham (Oct 27).
