The NL Central-leading Brewers try to prevent a Braves sweep. They send lefty Robert Gasser to the hill.
Gasser is coming off his best start of the season in a win over the Guardians. In that appearance, he tossed 5.2 innings, allowed 2 hits and no earned runs, walking 2 and striking out 5. For the season, he's got a 4.88 ERA. In 24 innings, he's allowed 22 hits and 13 earned runs, walking 11 and striking out 24. He's surrendered 6 home runs.
At the plate, Jake Bauers continues his potential All-Star season with 13 homers and an .870 OPS. Brice Turang has 11 homers and an .830 OPS. Jackson Chourio has 10 homers and a .908 OPS in only 40 games. Christian Yelich has a .776 OPS and 5 homers in 43 games.
For the Brewers against Bryce Elder, Turang is 4 for 10 with a home run. William Contreras is 2 for 10 with a double and a triple. Joey Ortiz is 2 for 4 with 2 singles. Yelich is 2 for 6 with 2 singles. Beuers is 0 for 7 with 5 K's.
The Braves are comfortably in 1st place in the NL East and are one game away from sweeping the Brewers.
They send Bryce Elder to the hill as he tries to rebound from his season-worst start against the Mets. In that appearance, he allowed 10 hits and 6 earned runs in 4 innings. He gave up 2 homers, walked 2 and struck out 2.
Earlier this year, Elder looked like he was back to his All-Star form, but he's struggled lately. Overall, his numbers are still solid with a 1.4 bWAR and a 3.15 ERA. In 88.2 innings, he's allowed 74 hits, 31 runs, and 9 homers. He's walked 27 and struck out 73.
Atlanta has welcomed back Drake Baldwin, who is rapidly becoming one of the best catchers in MLB. He has 14 homers and an .887 OPS. Matt Olson has an .886 OPS and 20 homers. Michael Harris is at .856 with 14 homers. Ozzie Albies has 12 homers and a .788 OPS. Ronald Acuña Jr. is still on the injured list with a strained hamstring.
The only Braves hitter who has faced Robert Gasser is the newly acquired backup catcher Joey Bart. He's 2 for 2 with 2 singles.
Ordinarily, this would look like a likely win for the Braves and they would complete the sweep. But Elder hasn't been great lately and Milwaukee tends to maximize its roster by getting starters out of the game as soon as they need to in the interest of winning the game.
Milwaukee should salvage the final game of this series by getting to Elder, holding Atlanta's bats down, and leaving Georgia, avoiding the sweep against a potential playoff opponent.
