The regular season pauses for the next five weeks, as the NASCAR In-Season Challenge gets underway in California. The first race of the Challenge is set for Sonoma Raceway, as the Toyota/Save Mart 350 is staged on the road-course layout.
This race has been held annually since 1989, with the drivers completing a total of 218 miles, which is made up by 110 laps overall. The first stage consists of 25 laps, before 35 and 50 laps are completed in the second and final stages, respectively.
Shane van Gisbergen has been the dominant driver on road layouts since the start of last season, which includes a win in this unique race 12 months ago. The Kiwi is already a winner on the Cup Series schedule this year, and he will likely be a red-hot favorite for success in California.
Kyle Larson should also be considered after being a two-time winner of the Toyota/Save Mart 350. Larson’s form has improved in the last couple of rounds of the regular season, finishing fourth in the recent FireKeepers Casino 400.
Denny Hamlin and Tyler Reddick will also both hold leading claims based on their performances throughout the season.
At a big price, Michael McDowell could be suited by the conditions of this race. He has excelled in road races already this season, finishing fifth at COTA and then taking second in the Go Bowling at the Glen. He was also an impressive fourth in the Toyota/Save Mart 350 12 months ago.
