Civale Has Allowed 18 Earned Runs in His Last 3 Starts

Athletics righty Aaron Civale recently returned from the injured list after missing time with shoulder tendinitis. In his prior two starts before being shelved, he'd surrendered 12 earned runs in 9 innings against the Angels and Mariners, respectively. In his first start back, he gave up 6 earned runs and 9 hits in 3 innings.

His numbers for the season are respectable in the context of his recent bad run. He has a 0.8 bWAR and a 4.91 ERA in 12 starts. In 58.2 innings, he's allowed 74 hits, 32 earned runs, and 12 homers, walking 12 and striking out 41.

The A's are two games below .500, but are right on the Mariners' heels for 1st place in the AL West.

At the plate, Nick Kurtz leads MLB in on-base percentage at .439. He also leads the majors in RBI and the AL in runs scored.

Shea Langeliers has 19 homers and an .854 OPS. Jeff McNeil has been a disappointment with a .234 average and a .626 OPS. Tyler Soderstrom has an .816 OPS and leads the AL in doubles with 20. Slugging DH Brent Rooker is on the injured list with a bone bruise on his knee. He had 10 homers and a .670 OPS at the time of the injury.

Against Robbie Ray, Lawrence Butler is 2 for 3 with a home run. Langeliers is 2 for 4 with a home run. Joey Meneses is 1 for 3 with a home run. Zack Gelof is 1 for 1 with a single. McNeil is 1 for 8 with a double.

Ray Was Excellent in His Last Start

Robbie Ray's season has been one good start/one bad start for the most part. In his last start, he was excellent against the Braves, allowing 2 hits and no runs in 6.1 innings, walking 2 and striking out 8. In the prior start against the Nationals, he allowed 5 earned runs in 5.2 innings.

Overall, the former AL Cy Young Award winner has a 0.6 bWAR and a 4.07 ERA. He's thrown 79.2 innings, allowed 68 hits, 36 earned runs, and 14 homers. He's walked 38 and struck out 74.

The Giants are coming off a sweep at the Marlins' hands, so it's clear that they should sell at the trade deadline. That could include Ray.

At the plate, Rafael Devers is hitting .238, but leads the majors in doubles. Willy Adames is batting .223 with 13 homers. Matt Chapman has a .716 OPS and 7 homers. Jung Hoo Lee is batting .327 with 4 homers. Bryce Eldrdige has been tremendous with a .905 OPS and 6 homers in 36 games. Casey Schmitt has an .855 OPS and 16 home runs.

For the Giants against Civale, Luis Arraez is 6 for 26 with 2 doubles and a home run. Adames is 1 for 7 with a single. Chapman is 1 for 11 with a double. Devers is 2 for 13 with 2 singles, 5 walks, and 6 K's. Eldridge is 0 for 2. Eric Haase is 1 for 5 with a double. Lee is 1 for 5 with a single.

Athletics vs Giants Pick

The question with this matchup is whether Civale can be competent as he gets acclimated after a poor start when he returned from the IL. He's been quite bad for three straight starts. As inconsistent as Ray can be, he will generally fight his way through to give his team a chance to win.

Since Civale has been so hittable, this is a clear advantage for the Giants, who will take the opener of the 3-game rivalry series with its former Oakland neighbor in San Francisco.
