Yesavage Has Been Knocked Around in 2 of his Last 3 Starts

While Trey Yesavage is one of the best young pitching prospects in MLB, he has been knocked around in two of his last three starts.

Against the Marlins on May 25, he allowed 5 earned runs in 6.2 innings. He faced the Orioles on June 5 and allowed 6 earned runs in 5.2 innings. Those starts sandwich an excellent outing against the Orioles in Baltimore, allowing 2 hits and 1 run in 5 innings.

Overall, he's got a 1.3 bWAR in 8 starts. In 42.2 innings, he's allowed 31 hits and 15 earned runs, walking 19 and striking out 44. The righty has only allowed 2 homers.

Toronto has time to get back into playoff contention, but they need to become more consistent and that starts with their hitting. Except for Kazuma Okamoto, they are not hitting for much power. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has a .740 OPS and only 3 homers. Ernie Clement is leading the AL in hits and doubles. George Springer is batting .204 with 5 homers.

Against Ryan Weathers, Clement is 1 for 5 with a home run. Springer is 2 for 3 with a home run. Guerrero is 1 for 5 with a single. Okamoto is 1 for 3 with a single. Myles Straw is 1 for 3 with a single.

Weathers Also Needs a Rebound After 2 Bad Starts

Ryan Weathers has been up and down in his first year in pinstripes. His peripheral numbers are quite good, but he has games where he gets knocked around.

In his last two starts, he's allowed 10 earned runs in 12.2 innings against the Athletics and Red Sox, respectively. Four starts ago against these Blue Jays, he surrendered 5 earned runs in 5.1 innings. He had a good start against the Rays in there, allowing 4 hits and no runs in 7 innings.

In total, he's got a 1.0 bWAR and a 3.86 ERA. In 70 innings, he's given up 61 hits and 30 earned runs, walking 20 and striking out 79. He's allowed 13 homers.

The Bombers just swept the Guardians in Cleveland and have won 5 of 6. They're doing this without Aaron Judge, out for the foreseeable future.

Ben Rice is an MVP candidate with a 2.3 bWAR, a 1.005 OPS and 18 homers. Paul Goldschmidt has been excellent with a 1.2 bWAR and an .891 OPS. Ryan McMahon has been hot and his average is up to .217. Cody Bellinger has a 3.6 bWAR and an .841 OPS.

The Yankees have not had any success against Yesavage. Trent Grisham is 1 for 3 with a double. Jazz Chisholm Jr. is 1 for 4 with a single. No other Yankee has a hit or a walk. Rice is 0 for 5 with 2 K's. McMahon is 0 for 4 with a strikeout.

Yankees vs Blue Jays Pick

New York is rolling without Judge, but they will eventually need to address some offensive issues, particularly with whoever is going to get the bulk of the star outfielder's at-bats. Spencer Jones hasn't done much. But for now, they're playing very well. Toronto is not playing consistently as they've gotten close to .500 several times and then fallen back.

In this pitching matchup, both starters have hit a lull recently. But Yesavage has handled the Yankees very well and that should be enough to get Toronto the win.
