On May 8, the Cubs were 27-12 and 3.5 games in front in the NL Central. Since then, they've all but collapsed and are now barely over .500 and fading.
Edward Cabrera takes the start and desperately needs a rebound from a run of terrible starts culminating in a disastrous outing against the Giants in which he allowed 8 earned runs in 3.2 innings. He surrendered 3 homers in the 18-3 Cubs loss.
For the season, he has a -0.8 bWAR and a 4.99 ERA in 11 starts. He's allowed 61 hits in 57.2 innings, walking 21 and striking out 53.
Chicago is hitting a fair share of home runs, led by Ian Happ and Pete Crow-Armstrong. But they have not gotten the needed production from Dansby Swanson, still batting under .200, and Alex Bregman, who has an OPS below .700.
The Cubs have had very little success in limited opportunities against Ryan Feltner. Carson Kelly is 1 fof 1 with a single. Swanson is 1 for 3 with a single and 3 walks. Alex Bregman is 0 for 3. Michael Conforto is 0 for 6. Ian Happ is 0 for 3.
The veteran Ryan Feltner has spent his entire career in Colorado, which is a near-impossible task for pitchers. He can be a useful starter. In his past two starts, he's tossed 12 innings and allowed 1 earned run and 5 hits against the Giants and Brewers.
For the season, he's got a 1.0 bWAR and a 4.22 ERA. In 32 innings, he's allowed 27 hits and 15 earned runs, walking 10 and striking out 23.
Hunter Goodman is having a big season and is among the MLB leaders in home runs. Mickey Moniak is blossoming after flaming out with the Phillies and Angels. His OPS is above .940. Jake McCarthy has double digits in stolen bases and an OPS above .770.
For the Rockies against Cabrera, Willi Castro is 2 for 5 with a double. Ezequiel Tovar is 0 for 4 with a strikeout. Goodman is 0 for 1 with a walk. McCarthy and Edouard Julien are a combined 0 for 6.
The Rockies are among the worst teams in baseball. But over the past month and a half, the Cubs have been as bad or worse. When put into the context of expectations, they've been significantly worse and part of that is due to Cabrera's poor pitching.
Will Feltner hold the Cubs down for his third straight solid start? And can Cabrera get straight in the difficult environment for pitchers in Colorado?
The Rockies will knock Cabrera around and take the final game of the series behind Feltner.
