Weathers Had a Good Start After 3 Straight Poor Ones

In his first season in pinstripes, Ryan Weathers has been good at times and bad at times. Over his last start against the White Sox, he broke a string of three starts in which he surrendered 16 earned runs in 17 innings. In that game against the ChiSox, he tossed 6.1 innings, allowed 3 hits, 1 earned run, walked 1, and struck out 8.

For the season, he has a 1.1 bWAR and a 4.13 ERA. Over 80.2 frames, he's allowed 69 hits, 37 earned runs, and 16 homers. He's walked 22 and struck out 89. There's a lot to like about Weathers, but it's a toss-up as to what the Bombers will get from him when he takes the hill.

The Yankees might finally be feeling the effects of not having Aaron Judge as they have struggled offensively of late. Cody Bellinger, Ben Rice, and Paul Goldschmidt cannot carry them forever.

Anthony Volpe has been a pleasant surprise since his return from injury. So far, he has a batting average in the .280s and is taking a lot of walks. Still, New York is carrying too many hitters who are providing next-to-nothing, including Ryan McMahon and Austin Wells.

Against Tarik Skubal, Goldschmidt is 5 for 10 with 2 home runs. The rest of the batters have had almost no success against the 2X AL Cy Young Award winner and arguably the best pitcher in MLB.

Bellinger is 1 for 3 with a single. Jose Caballero is 1 for 4 with a single. McMahon is 1 for 5 with a single. Amed Rosario is 1 for 13 with a single.

Skubal is Trying to Find His Groove After Returning From Injury

Tarik Skubal made a stunningly rapid return from having a bone chip removed from his elbow, but has not been his normal, dominant self in two starts. Against the Guardians, he tossed 4.2 innings, allowed 5 hits and 2 earned runs, walking 1 and striking out 4. In his second start, he pitched 5.2 innings against the White Sox, allowed 7 hits, 3 earned runs, walked 1, and struck out 8. He allowed 2 homers.

Overall, he has a 1.6 bWAR and a 3.02 ERA. While this is solid, it's higher than his 2.21 and 2.39 marks in his CYA seasons of 2024-25. This year, he's thrown 53.2 innings, allowed 57 hits, 18 earned runs, and 5 homers. He's walked 8 and struck out 57.

Detroit's offense has struggled apart from Dillon Dingler, Riley Greene, Kevin McGonigle, and Gleyber Torres. Dingler is leading the team in homers.

Detroit has had limited exposure and almost no success against Weathers. Zach McKinstry is 1 for 1 with a single. No other Tigers batter has a hit against him.

Yankees vs Tigers Pick

Detroit is desperately trying to get back into contention, so they don't need to make the tough decision to trade Skubal at the deadline. It's Skubal getting back into his CYA groove that will play a key role in that attempt to have a chance to make the playoffs.

New York is relatively assured of making the playoffs, but Weathers needs to show they can trust him to be part of their rotation when the games are most important.

Neither team is hitting much at the moment, but the Yankees have not had much success against Skubal in general. For this matchup, Skubal will hold down the Bombers and the Tigers will get to Weathers to give Detroit the win.
