Kyle Freeland is 1-6 with an 8.08 ERA. Since coming back off the IL in late April, his ERA has been north of eleven. His FIP is 6.34, and his FIP over his last three starts is 8.34; the underlying numbers are moving in the wrong direction. He has not reached five innings in any recent start and has not reached five strikeouts either. The Rockies have won two of their ten starts this season. This is not a pitcher working through a rough patch; this is a pitcher who has lost it.
Colorado's lineup features TJ Rumfield at .284 with seven home runs and Troy Johnston hitting .310 with an .804 OPS, two legitimate contributors capable of keeping a game interesting. The SI article describes him as having "cooled off a bit after a great first month," which is accurate, but cooling off from elite still leaves you with one of the better arms on the board tonight. He will face a Rockies lineup that has hit him for zero hits in multiple career plate appearances against their top bats.
The Angels are 23-37 overall, not a good team, but they are 6-4 in their last ten and Soriano gives them a genuine chance to win any game he starts. The lineup has enough around Oswald Peraza and the middle of the order to generate run support tonight.
Freeland's FIP over his last three starts is 8.34. His season ERA is already 8.08. Soriano has a 2.65 ERA and a 3.40 FIP. That is a gap of nearly five runs between these two pitchers.
