Spiraling Giants Send Roupp to the Mound

The Giants have been a borderline disaster this season. They broke a 5-game losing streak on Sunday in a blowout over the Rockies. But none of their offseason moves, particularly the hiring of neophyte MLB manager Tony Vitello, have worked out.

Fortunately for them, there is still time to crawl back into contention for a Wild Card. They can pretty much forget the division given the way the Dodgers and Padres are playing.

San Francisco starter Landen Roupp has been a bright spot this season with a 0.7 bWAR in 11 starts with a 3.30 ERA. In 60 innings, he's allowed 49 hits and 22 earned runs, walking 22 and striking out 68. He's looking like a keeper as a mid-rotation piece.

Casey Schmitt has been excellent at the plate with an .880 OPS and 12 homers. Willy Adames is finally over .700 with his OPS with 8 homers. Rafael Devers is at .730 with 7 homers. Both Harrison Bader and Heliot Ramos are still on the injured list. Bader has plantar fasciitis. Ramos has a quad strain. Jung Hoo Lee has raised his average above .300.

The Giants have never faced Shane Drohan in the regular season.

Milwaukee Goes With Drohan as an Opener

The Brewers are building a gap between themselves and the other contenders in the NL Central, helped along by the Cubs' struggles. Since Milwaukee is dealing with starting pitching injuries to Brandon Woodruff and Logan Henderson and struggles from Brandon Sproat, they occasionally use openers. For the first game of their series with the Giants, they will do just that with Shane Drohan.

The left-handed rookie Drohan has been a bulk reliever this season. In 11 appearances, he's accrued a 0.4 bWAR with a 2.63 ERA. In 27.1 innings, he's allowed 22 hits and 8 earned runs, surrendering only 1 homer. He's walked 8 and struck out 28.

He was acquired from the Red Sox in the Caleb Durbin trade.

The Brewers have won 12 of 16 to launch themselves to the top spot in the division.

Jake Bauers is having a borderline All-Star season with an .842 OPS and 9 homers. Brice Turang is at .829 with 7 homers and 9 stolen bases in 11 attempts. William Contreras is at .762. Christian Yelich is at .767 with 4 homers, but he's missed a chunk of the season with injuries.

Against Roupp, Contreras is 3 for 4 with 3 singles. Bauers is 2 for 4 with 2 singles. Jackson Chourio is 1 for 4 with a double. Sal Frelick is 1 for 5 with a single. Joey Ortiz is 1 for 5 with a single. Yelich is 0 for 1.

Giants vs Brewers Pick

The Giants have been playing so terribly and the Brewers so well that it's tempting to take that too seriously instead of looking at the game individually. Roupp has been very good this season and Milwaukee will use Drohan for a few innings at most before going to the bullpen.

Despite the Giants' poor play, San Francisco is coming off a huge exultation blowout to break a losing streak.

San Francisco will take the first game of their series in Milwaukee behind Roupp.
