Randy Vásquez opened the 2026 season as one of the more reliable options in San Diego's rotation, carrying a sub-3.50 ERA through the first two months. His FIP over his last three starts is 6.71. He allowed three solo home runs in the first three innings of his most recent start against Philadelphia, and the contact quality in that stretch was not soft.
He is still capable of a clean six-inning performance; the stuff is there on his better nights. His recent trend makes that a harder assumption to lean on on Tuesday.
Manny Machado and Jackson Merrill give San Diego its most consistent offensive contributors. The Padres' lineup is functional enough to keep games close.
Aaron Nola's FIP over his last three starts is 8.01. He has had stretches this season where the results have not matched his career standard, and the recent numbers are among the worst he has posted in years. His start against the Padres on May 26 was one of his better recent outings, two earned runs, six innings, but the context around it has been rough.
Philadelphia's strength on Tuesday is less about Nola and more about who they have behind him. The Phillies' bullpen has been a reliable shutdown unit this season, and Citizens Bank Park has been a productive home environment. Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper anchor an offense that makes up for a shaky starter faster than most lineups can.
Both starters are cold. Neither Vásquez's 6.71 nor Nola's 8.01 last-3 FIP suggests a dominant outing is coming.
What separates Tuesday is the context around them: Philadelphia is at home with the better bullpen and the deeper lineup. In a game where both starters are likely to leave early, those edges win games.
