Christian Scott is Coming Into His Own

The Mets are being cautious with Christian Scott as he moves forward in his first full season after Tommy John surgery. But he's finally finding his way. In his last two starts, he's thrown 10.2 innings and allowed 1 run and 9 hits, walking 4 and striking out 13. Against the Marlins in his last start, he got his first MLB victory.

For the season, he's accrued a 0.7 bWAR and a 2.97 ERA. In 7 starts, he's thrown 30.1 innings, allowed 26 hits and 10 earned runs, walking 16 and striking out 38. He's only surrendered 1 home run.

Except for Juan Soto, the Mets have barely hit at all. Soto has a .943 OPS and 13 home runs. The rest of the offense has been woeful. Bo Bichette had a big game in the final matchup with the Mariners in Seattle, but he has a long way to go to raise his .590 OPS. Marcus Semien is hitting .220. Mark Vientos is at .219. Brett Baty is hitting .227. Carson Benge has been hitting well lately and his average is up to .252 with a .698 OPS.

Against Michael King, Bichette is 6 for 21 with a double. MJ Melendez is 2 for 6 with a home run. Soto is 1 for 2 with a single and a walk. Baty is 1 for 3 with a home run. Semien is 3 for 9 with a double.

Michael King Has Gotten Knocked Around in Consecutive Starts

The Padres have lost 8 of 9 and have fallen 7 games behind the Dodgers in the NL West.

To help them break out of their funk, Michael King heads to the hill. King has not pitched well in back-to-back starts. Against the Athletics, he allowed 4 runs in 3.2 innings. Then, against the Nationals, he gave up 5 runs in 6 innings.

His season-long numbers are respectable. He has a 1.7 bWAR and a 3.18 ERA. In 68 innings, he's surrendered 48 hits and 24 earned runs, walking 29 and striking out 65.

San Diego's lack of offense is catching up to them. Manny Machado is batting .174, though he does have 11 homers. Xander Bogaerts' batting average is down to .231 after a fast start. Ramon Laureano is hitting .203. Jackson Merrill is at .207. Nick Castellanos was recently designated for assignment after posting a .560 OPS in 115 at-bats. Fernando Tatis Jr. has 1 home run all season.

No Padre has ever faced Christian Scott in the majors.

Mets vs Padres Pick

Neither team is hitting very well at the moment. The Padres have more proven bats than the Mets do, but that has not made much of a difference of late. On the mound, King has had trouble lately and Scott appears to be getting his feet under him in the majors.

The Mets' young righty will hold the Padres' bats down and New York will get to King to help them take the victory on the road in San Diego.
