Yesavage Strives to Continue His Impressive Career Start
Blue Jays' righty Trey Yesavage had a star turn in the 2025 postseason, going 3-1 with a 3.58 ERA in 6 games (5 starts), allowing 18 hits and 11 earned runs in 27.2 innings. Toronto is being cautious with him and he's making his 5th start this season. He has a 1.40 ERA and a 1.0 bWAR. In 19.1 innings, he's allowed 17 hits and 3 earned runs, walking 8 and striking out 21.
The Blue Jays are just starting to get going offensively. But George Springer is still hovering around .200. They are still without catcher Alejandro Kirk, dealing with a thumb injury.
Kazuma Okamoto has an OPS above .750 and has shown impressive power. Andres Gimenez has an OPS of around .650. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has been having a worrisome power outage and his average is down in the .280s.
Against Cam Schlittler, Guerrero is 5 for 8, all singles. Springer is 2 for 4 with a double. Ernie Clement is 3 for 6 with 3 singles. Daulton Varsho is 1 for 4 with a single.
Schlittler is Being Mentioned Among MLB's Best Pitchers
In his second year, Cam Schlittler has emerged as one of the best pitchers in MLB. He's leading the majors in ERA at 1.35, FIP at 1.82, and ERA+ at 317. He leads the AL in WHIP at 0.783 and wins at 6.
In 60 innings, he's allowed 36 hits and 9 earned runs, walking 11 and striking out 68. He's only allowed more than 2 runs in 2 starts this season.
The Yankees are going to have some decisions to make with their batting order in the near future. Anthony Volpe has played well and shown great plate discipline since he took over for the injured Jose Caballero at shortstop. When Caballero returns, expect Volpe to at least play some role.
Ryan McMahon is hitting well below .200 as is Austin Wells. They cannot continue to function with black holes in the lineup. Trent Grisham is hitting below .200, but has shown some pop.
Ben Rice continues his MVP-contending turn with an OPS of around 1.050. He's right behind Aaron Judge for the team lead in home runs.
Against Yesavage, the Yankees have never recorded a hit in 15 at-bats. Only Judge has gotten on base with a walk.
Blue Jays vs Yankees Pick
This matchup has all the makings of a pitcher's duel with two of the top young starters in the American League. Schlittler is more established than Yesavage, but both have bright futures.
New York didn't hit Yesavage in their opportunities against him in the playoffs last year. Schlittler has been brilliant, but there will be a hiccup at some point. That will happen in this game as the Blue Jays take the 3rd game of the series.
