An important summer of test action continues for England on Thursday, as the 2nd Test against Sri Lanka gets underway. Brendon McCullum would have been happy enough with his team’s performance in the first test, as England edged over the line before the close of day four at Old Trafford.
The hosts were immediately in the ascendency after the first innings, smashing 358 runs to give Sri Lanka a sizable target to reach. Jamie Smith was the standout player, hitting 111 from 148 balls on an excellent showing. Sri Lanka responded well, hitting 326, with 113 contributed by Kamindu Mendis before his dismissal.
Matthew Potts and Chris Woakes took three wickets apiece in the bowling attack. In truth, England stuttered for long period in response, losing the wickets of Ben Duckett, Dan Lawrence, and Ollie Pope, before Joe Root’s arrival sparked a response.
Root hit 62 runs from 128 balls, while Harry Brook and Jamie Smith scored respective totals of 32 and 39 before Chris Woakes helped Root get England over the line.
Olly Stone is a notable inclusion for England ahead of the second test, as the pace bowler will make his return to the format after nearly a three-year absence. Spinal surgery has limited his involvement for the test team, but he has taken ten wickets from his three test appearances, and could offer England something different this week.
