The White Sox have made a stunning rise to contention after several objectively horrific seasons. Davis Martin has been a key part of that. He's leading MLB in wins with 9. His bWAR is 3.2, and he has a 2.41 ERA in 13 starts. In 78.1 innings, he's allowed 69 hits and 21 earned runs, walking 17 and striking out 79.
Martin was a 14th-round pick in the 2018 MLB Draft, so this is a major rise from that relatively low status.
The White Sox have become one of the most entertaining teams in the league. They hit a lot of home runs. Munetaka Murakami is on the injured list with a hamstring strain, but he'd hit 20 homers before that. Colson Montgomery has 17 homers and an .801 OPS. Miguel Vargas has 16 homers and an .860 OPS.
Only two White Sox have faced Cole. Andrew Benintendi is 4 for 19 with a home run.
Randal Grichuk is 3 for 23 with 3 singles.
Since returning after Tommy John surgery, Gerrit Cole has already accrued a 0.8 bWAR in 4 starts. he has a 2.45 ERA, has tossed 22 innings, allowed 17 hits and 6 earned runs, walking 6 and striking out 18.
New York is dealing with a litany of injuries. Two-thirds of its regular outfield is out with Aaron Judge and Trent Grisham both on the IL. Giancarlo Stanton is not close to returning. Austin Wells is also out.
Still, Cody Bellinger has a 3.5 bWAR and an .824 OPS with 10 homers. Jose Caballero has played all over the field and has a 1.3 bWAR with 15 stolen bases. Paul Goldschmidt has a 1.3 bWAR with 9 homers.
The Bombers have won 7 of 9 to take over 1st place in the AL East.
Against Davis Martin, Bellinger is 2 for 3 with a home run. Jazz Chisholm Jr. is 1 for 4 with a home run. Amed Rosario is 2 for 3 with 2 doubles. Max Schuemann is 2 for 4 with a triple. Anthony Volpe is 1 for 6 with a double. Caballero is 2 for 2 with 2 singles.
The White Sox have been a huge surprise, but they and Martin get a huge test in the Bronx. While the ChiSox are likely going to be around playoff contention for the duration, they need to show they can play with the big boys of the league and that means the Yankees.
New York and Cole will put them in their place as they take the first game of the series in the Bronx.
