Valdez Has Struggled in Recent Outings
Framber Valdez is 3-5 with a 4.40 ERA and a 4.51 FIP. He signed with Detroit after nine seasons with Houston and was expected to anchor this rotation. The results have been inconsistent. His ERA has climbed over the last month and his last three starts have produced a 5.79 FIP β nearly 1.3 points above his season baseline, reflecting real deterioration in the underlying contact quality. His worst outing of the season came in May, when he allowed 10 runs against the Red Sox before being pulled in the third inning.
Detroit is 29-42 overall but 6-4 in its last ten games, showing better form recently. Spencer Torkelson and Riley Greene anchor the lineup. The Tigers have been competitive in this series but they're asking Valdez to hold his own against the best pitcher on Houston's staff, and his recent numbers suggest that's a difficult ask.
Brown Is Back and the Astros Needed It
Hunter Brown is 1-0 with a 0.84 ERA and a 1.65 FIP. He returns to the mound Tuesday after missing time, and his season numbers, posted across enough starts to carry weight, reflect one of the best pitcher profiles in the American League. His FIP and ERA are within a run of each other, and his 1.65 FIP is exactly where it's been for three consecutive starts. Brown gets strikeouts, limits walks, and keeps the ball in the park. His return gives Houston a starter capable of carrying a game on his own.
The Astros are 35-39 overall but 50% in their last ten. Yordan Alvarez and Cam Smith give Houston their best run-producing options, and Daikin Park has been a fair environment this season. The Astros' offense has the slight lineup edge at .729 OPS against Detroit's .705.
Tigers vs Astros Pick
BBrown returning with a 0.84 ERA against a Valdez who has posted a 5.79 FIP over his last three starts. Houston gets the pitching edge and the lineup edge at home. The fundamental case here is almost entirely built on the starter gap, and that gap is as wide as any on Tuesday's slate.
