Cecconi Has Been a Reasonably Reliable Starter

Slade Cecconi is a reliable, though not spectacular, starter for the Guardians. That's all they ask him to be.

In general, he's expected to give them around 5 innings and to surrender 2-3 runs to get them to their bullpen and be either in the lead or within striking distance of the lead. He accomplishes that. In his last start against the Red Sox, he tossed 4.1 innings, allowed 7 hits, and 3 earned runs. The start before than against the Phillies, he tossed 5 innings and allowed 6 hits and 3 earned runs.

For the season, he has a 0.0 bWAR and a 5.25 ERA. He's tossed 61.2 innings and allowed 72 hits, 36 earned runs, walked 20, and struck out 50.

Star 3rd baseman Jose Ramirez is finally getting hot. His average is above .240 and his OPS is approaching .800. His stolen base percentage is, as usual, excellent. He's just behind Nasim NuΓ±ez for the MLB lead.

Brayan Rocchio's OPS is hovering around .780. Travis Bazzana is over .800. Kyle Manzardo is over .720. Steven Kwan is starting to hit after a terrible first two months.

Against Carlos Rodon, Stuart Fairchild is 1 for 2 with a home run. David Fry is 3 for 9 with 3 singles. Rhys Hoskins is 3 for 11 with a double and a home run. Kwan is 2 for 14 with 2 singles. Ramirez is 13 for 52 with 4 doubles, a triple, and 5 RBI. He's walked 8 times.

Rodon is Still Working His Way Back After Elbow Surgery

Carlos Rodon missed the first month of the season as he recovered from elbow surgery. Since his return, he's been up and down. His last two starts have been quite good, tossing 11 innings, allowing 7 hits and 2 earned runs. After walking 5 in his first start of the season, his control has improved significantly.

For the season, he has a 0.4 bWAR in 4 starts. His ERA is 3.32 in 19 innings, allowing 12 hits and 7 earned runs, walking 13 and striking out 20.

The Bombers are without captain Aaron Judge, out with a bone bruise on his ribcage.

Ben Rice continues his MVP-caliber season with an OPS above 1.040. He's tied for the team lead in home runs with Judge. Cody Bellinger has been hot with an OPS above .840 and a league-leading bWAR. Jazz Chisholm is finally hitting up to expectations and his average is above .240. Austin Wells continues to struggle, batting below .170.

For the Yankees against Cecconi, Bellinger is 1 for 3 with a home run. Ryan McMahon is 2 for 2 with a home run. Chisholm is 1 for 2 with a single. Rice is 0 for 3. Anthony Volpe is 0 for 3. Wells is 1 for 3 with a single.

Guardians vs Yankees Pick

New York is trying to avoid a sweep at home to Cleveland. Rodon has been limited in his innings, so he shouldn't be expected to get beyond the 6th inning. Cecconi is not asked to get that far into the game.

The Guardians have been up and down against Rodon while several Yankees have had success against Cecconi. Still, New York has struggled in this series and Cleveland is playing well. The Guardians will keep the game within 1 run.
