Giolito's ERA Is One of the Largest ERA-FIP Gaps in Baseball Right Now

Lucas Giolito has a 4.97 ERA and a 7.33 FIP. That gap of 2.36 runs between ERA and FIP is a signal as loud as any number posted this season. He has been getting results better than his contact quality deserves, and the runway is short. His last start lasted 2.2 innings, during which he walked three batters in a row to open the sixth and never made it out of the inning.

San Diego's rotation is also missing Nick Pivetta, Joe Musgrove, Germán Márquez, and Matt Waldron, all injured. Giolito got this start by default as much as anything else. He is pitching against a Philadelphia lineup that swept the Padres last week in San Diego.

Wheeler Is Back and Pitching Like He Never Left

Zack Wheeler is 2.27 ERA through seven starts. He returned from venous thoracic outlet surgery and has not looked like a pitcher shaking rust off — he has been dominant. His start at Fenway on May 12 was his signature outing of the season, and he is sitting at a 2.27 ERA with a 0.85 WHIP and a 40:9 K:BB ratio through 43.2 innings. He struck out the side multiple times in his last outing before his next start lined up against the Padres.

Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper anchor a Phillies lineup at home that has given Giolito-type pitchers no room to survive lucky innings.

Padres vs Phillies Pick

Both starters are cold. Neither Vásquez's 6.71 nor Nola's 8.01 last-3 FIP suggests a dominant outing is coming.

What separates Tuesday is the context around them: Philadelphia is at home with the better bullpen and the deeper lineup. In a game where both starters are likely to leave early, those edges win games.
