Miles Mikolas had a terrible start to the season, but in his last start against the Braves, he tossed 5 innings, allowed 3 hits, no runs, walked none, and struck out 3.
For the season, he has a -0.7 bWAR and a 6.17 ERA. He's made 6 starts and 11 overall appearances. In total, he's given up 51 hits in 46.2 innings, allowed 32 runs, walked 14, and struck out 31.
The rebuilding Nats are an MLB surprise this season as they're hovering around .500 and in playoff contention.
James Wood is emerging into superstardom with an OPS above .960 and in the top five for home runs. CJ Abrams is almost having as good a year as Wood. Daylen Lile has an OPS above .750. Keibert Ruiz has been hitting well with a .760 OPS and is finally playing close to his talent level and expectations.
No Nationals player has ever faced Gavin Williams in the big leagues.
Gavin Williams is quietly becoming one of the better pitchers in the American League. In his last start, he held the Phillies to no runs and 4 hits in 8 innings, walking none and striking out 11. This season, he has a 1.6 bWAR and leads the AL in wins with 7. He has a 3.25 ERA. In 69.1 innings, he's allowed 55 hits and 25 earned runs, walking 22 and striking out 84.
For the Guardians, Jose Ramirez has again hit the skids at the plate with his average down to .229. Chase DeLauter has 7 homers and a .776 OPS. Brayan Rocchio is batting .299 with an .802 OPS. Patrick Bailey has not hit since he was acquired from the Giants, batting .120 in 27 plate appearances. Steven Kwan is hitting .206.
Against Mikolas, Rhys Hoskins is 4 for 20 with 2 homers. Kyle Manzardo is 2 for 6 with a home run. Austin Hedges is 5 for 8 with a double. Bailey is 1 for 5 with a single. Ramirez is 1 for 8 with a double.
The Nationals have won the first two games of the series and are going for the sweep. The pitching matchup heavily favors the Guardians. Mikolas' last start aside, he's been exceedingly hittable this season. The opposite is largely true for Williams, who will be an All-Star and is a Cy Young Award contender.
The Guardians will stave off the sweep and take the win in the third game of the series.
