Who Will Train the Winner of the Kentucky Derby?
There is a traditionally wide-open feeling surrounding the Kentucky Derby this year, with no outstanding contender dominating the betting at present. However, that could change this weekend if Chief Wallabee (currently +600) wins the Florida Derby impressively.
William Mott is the trainer of the current favorite, with the 72-year-old bidding to win the race for the second straight year. But, Mott doesn’t have any other leading chances in the betting this year, making him a slightly dangerous betting angle for those looking for a level of insurance.
Unsurprisingly, Chad Brown is favored to train the winner of the Kentucky Derby this year. Brown trains two of the top three in the betting, with Paladin and Emerging Market both likely to be leading contenders at Churchill Downs. However, the 47-year-old is yet to saddle the winner of the Derby.
Bob Baffert is a big price to train the winner of the Triple Crown race this year, and a victory would see him set the record for the most winners in the race. However, the Hall of Famer hardly boasts a strong field of possible starters this year, with his best chance looking like +1600 shot Potente.
At the current prices, Todd Pletcher may be of most interest. The 58-year-old is a two-time winner of the Derby, most recently winning the race with Always Dreaming in 2017. Pletcher holds a number of excellent chances, including Nearly, Renegade, and Class President.
