Race Preview

A competitive renewal of the G3 Jeff Ruby Steaks could indicate a potential outsider worth following with the Kentucky Derby in mind. Last year, Final Gambit won the race at Turfway, before running a big race at Churchill Downs.

Fulleffort is one of a couple of runners for trainer Brad Cox on Saturday. The three-year-old already has track experience, having finished second in the John Battaglia Memorial at Turfway last time out. Has finished second on both starts so far this season.

For many, Stark Contrast will be the class angle in this field, having achieved Equibase ratings of 107 on his last two starts. He ran a stormer when second in the G1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf, before winning the Eddie Logan Stakes on his return in January.

A number of contenders transfer from the turf this weekend, including the Cox-trained Argos. The three-year-old landed the G1 Summer Stakes at Woodbine last year, before finishing eighth in the Juvenile Turf. Was last seen finishing a disappointing fifth in the Colonel Liam Stakes.

Of those at bigger prices, Black Hornet could be of interest for Exotics. The three-year-old for Brendan Walsh took a major step up in class in his stride last time, landing the Black Gold Stakes at Fair Grounds. Likely to improve again.

Jeff Ruby Steaks Picks

A chance could be taken on the well-bred Turf Star for trainer Graham Motion this Saturday.

The three-year-old has been slow away on his last two starts, but has come home charging on both starts. First-time headgear should sharpen up this contender, who was previously sixth in the Juvenile Turf at Del Mar.
