Excitement levels are rising ahead of the opening leg of the Triple Crown- the Kentucky Derby, which will be staged at Churchill Downs on Saturday, May 3, 2025. All of this year’s runners will have their sights set on joining the legends of the sport by winning the Triple Crown.

However, only 13 previous stars have won the Derby, Preakness, and Belmont Stakes in the same season. Could that number be increased in 2025?

Can the Triple Crown be Achieved in 2025?

The feat of winning the U.S. Triple Crown is one of sport’s greatest accomplishments. Throughout history, only 13 horses have ever landed victories in each of the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and Belmont Stakes.

However, Triple Crown glory has been achieved in relatively recent history, with Justify becoming the most recent legend to join the plethora of greats in 2018. American Pharoah is the only other living Triple Crown winner, having claimed success in all legs in 2015.

Kenneth McPeek deserved praise last year, as he dreamt of achieving the feat with Mystik Dan after winning the Derby at Churchill Downs. However, the contender could only finish second in the Preakness, before fading to eighth in the Belmont Stakes.

Excluding Triple Crown winners, no horse has followed up with a success in the Preakness since California Chrome in 2014. He became the sixth dual winner of the Derby and Preakness since 2000, with that tally taken to eight when taking into account Justify and American Pharoah’s wins.

Therefore, it is hard to foresee a horse winning both Triple Crown races this year, as the two-week turnaround is extremely challenging.
