The current favorites to win the World Cup open their Group H campaign in Atlanta on June 15, as Spain take on Cape Verde.

The reigning European champions will be heavily favored to beat their opponents by a wide-scoring margin, but Cape Verde will be hoping to create one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history.

European Champions Favored to Win World Cup

All eyes will be on Spain when Luis de la Fuente’s team open their World Cup campaign in Group H on June 15. Spain were the dominant force at EURO 2024, winning the competition and setting the record for the most goals scored.

Their progression has continued since then, reaching the Nations League final and topping their qualifying group. La Roja have avoided defeat in their last ten internationals, scoring at least three goals in two of their previous four.

Yamine Lamal is unlikely to feature on MD1, but Spain are well-stocked in attacking areas with high-quality players such as Ferran Torres and Dani Olmo ready to step up.

Cape Verde Make World Cup Debut

History will be made in Group H this summer, as the African nation Cape Verde will be playing in their first-ever World Cup.

Bubista’s team overcame huge odds to achieve the feat, winning seven of their ten African qualifiers, and scoring 18 goals in the process. Progress has been made on the international stage since 2013, reaching the quarterfinals at AFCON on two occasions.

Confidence could be gained from their warm-up results, beating Serbia and Bermuda, and scoring six goals overall without conceding.

Spain vs. Cape Verde Pick

Cape Verde should be respected after some fine recent results. However, the strength for Spain ensures that the only logical betting angle this weekend is for the EURO champions to cover the spread.
