Jesus Luzardo has had an up-and-down season to say the least. When he's been good, he's been one of the best lefties in MLB; when he's been bad, he's been horrible. His numbers are indicative of that. However, in his past two starts, he's been very good, allowing 2 earned runs in 12 innings.
For the season, he has a 0.7 bWAR and a 4.85 ERA. In 10 starts, he's tossed 55.2 innings, allowed 58 hits and 30 earned runs, walking 15 and striking out 66.
Philly has slowed down after their blazing start under Don Mattingly. Despite that hot streak, key parts of their offense have still been struggling. Trea Turner is batting .225 with a .619 OPS. Adolis Garcia has been awful with a .203 average and a .607 OPS. Bryson Stott and Alec Bohm have been terrible all season. Bryce Harper has an .888 OPS and 12 homers. Kyle Schwarber has 20 homers and a .947 OPS, but he's been stuck on 20 dingers for a while.
Against Randy Vasquez, Bohm is 2 for 3 with a home run. Harper is 2 for 3 with a double. Rafael Marchan is 2 for 2 with 2 singles. Brandon Marsh is 1 for 1 with a single. Schwarber is 1 for 2 with a single. Stott is 1 for 3 with a single. Turner is 1 for 3 with a single.
The Padres acquired Randy Vasquez from the Yankees as part of the trade that sent Juan Soto to New York. The righty posted a 2.3 bWAR in 2025. To show that it was not a fluke, so far in 2026, he has a 1.5 bWAR and his ERA is nearly a full run lower.
In 10 starts, he's tossed 54.2 innings, allowed 49 hits and 18 earned runs, walking 16 and striking out 45. He struggled in his last start, allowing 3 runs in 4.1 innings in a loss to the Dodgers. But overall, he's been very reliable.
The Padres are battling for 1st place in the NL West with the Dodgers. Gavin Sheets leads the team in homers with 9 and an .838 OPS. Manny Machado continues to struggle with a .608 OPS. Fernando Tatis is still looking for his 1st home run of the season. Ramon Laureano is hitting .212 with a .674 OPS. Ty France has an .846 OPS. Nick Castellanos faces his former teammates with a .599 OPS and a .202 batting average.
For the Padres against Luzardo, France is 2 for 11 with a home run. Machado is 3 for 9 with 2 homers. Tatis is 4 for 10 with 2 doubles. Xander Bogaerts is 1 for 5 with a double. Miguel Andujar is 1 for 4 with a single. Castellanos is 3 for 11 with a double.
The question with Luzardo is which version of him shows up. The Padres have had some success against him in the past, but if he's on his game, no one can hit him. Vasquez has been trustworthy for the most part since he joined the Padres.
In this matchup, the Padres will get to Luzardo and Vasquez will hold Philly down to get San Diego the win.
