Loupp Has Been Reasonably Solid, but Has Lost 6 Straight Decisions
Landen Roupp has been the Giants' second-best starter behind Logan Webb this season. His ERA was blown up to 4.24 because of a few bad starts, but he's been generally reliable. His last two starts were against the Cubs. In the first, he allowed 1 run in 5.2 hits. In the second, he gave up 4 runs in 4.2 innings.
For the season, he has a 0.4 bWAR. In 74.1 innings, he's allowed 64 hits and 35 earned runs, walking 32 and striking out 82. He keeps the ball in the park, only surrendering 4 homers.
The Giants have many stars, but their most productive hitters have been the relative unknowns, Casey Schmitt and Bryce Eldridge. Schmitt has an OPS over .820 with 15 homers. Eldridge has a near 1.000 OPS and 6 homers. Jung Hoo Lee is hitting nearly .330.
Given how poorly the Giants have played this season and the name players who have not performed, they are said to be willing to discuss Willy Adames, Rafael Devers, and other high-priced players. This is obviously contingent on how they play in the run-up to the MLB trade deadline.
Against Martin Perez, Luis Arraez is 1 for 8 with a home run. Matt Chapman is 8 for 25 with 4 doubles. Devers is 4 for 12 with 3 doubles. Eric Haase is 3 for 6 with 2 doubles. Adames is 5 for 19 with a double. Lee is 1 for 3 with a single.
Trustworthy Veteran Lefty Perez is Having a Tremendous Comeback Season
Fifteen-year veteran lefty Martin Perez always has a job because teams know they'll get a professional pitcher who will do whatever is asked of him and probably provide a solid performance. With the Braves this season, he has a 1.5 bWAR and a 2.90 ERA. In 62 innings, he's surrendered 44 hits, 20 earned runs, 6 homers, walked 21, and struck out 51.
Against the Mets in his last start, he held the Amazins to 1 run in 5.1 innings, walking 1 and striking out 4.
Atlanta has activated one of its best hitters this year, catcher Drake Baldwin, who was out with an oblique injury. He has an OPS above .920 and 14 homers. Michael Harris has an OPS over .850 and 14 homers. Ozzie Albies is over .760 with 10 homers. They are still without Ronald Acuña Jr.
For the Braves against Roupp, Matt Olson is 4 for 8 with a double. Austin Riley is 2 for 5 with a double. Harris is 2 for 6 with 2 singles. Albies is 0 for 5. Baldwin is 0 for 2 with a walk and a strikeout.
Giants vs Braves Pick
The Giants have been one of the biggest underachievers in baseball this season. But they've put up a good showing in this series in Atlanta. For Thursday's game, they need a big performance from Loupp. Since they've been so inconsistent this season, do not expect them to put up runs against Perez, nor for Loupp to hold the Braves' lineup down.
Atlanta will take the third game of the series behind Perez and take down San Francisco.
