USA vs El Salvador Preview

US Chasing Down Canada

The United States spot at the World Cup in Qatar at the end of the year is far from assured coming into this latest round of qualifiers. They currently sit second in the overall standings, behind Canada, who currently have a one-point advantage after eight rounds of fixtures. The US are still in control of their own destiny though, as they face a huge game against Canada on Sunday, which could determine the side best placed to finish top of the standings.

US have scored 12 goals in the games that they have played to this point, and have conceded just five goals, which is the joint-best defensive record in qualification. They were held to a draw in their last qualifying match, as Jamaica secured a famous point against the United States. However, the US did bounce back in an international friendly in their following match, as they beat Bosnia 1-0 after a goal by Cole Bassett. Regardless, the next seven days are crucial for their chances of reaching the World Cup later this year.

El Salvador Out Of Contention

El Salvador’s hopes of reaching the World Cup finals in Qatar are already over, as they are down in seventh place in the standings. They are eight points behind fourth-placed Panama, which already looks to be a mountain too big to climb with just six games remaining in the group. They have picked up just a single victory from the eight games that they have played in the group, and have been beaten on four occasions. El Salvador have allowed the second-highest number of goals in the qualification campaign, having allowed ten to this point.

They were beaten in their last World Cup qualifier in the middle of November, as they fell to a 2-1 home defeat against Panama. They are winless in two matches since that defeat, having played out a 1-1 draw against Ecuador and being beaten by Chile 1-0 in international friendlies in December. This promises to be another huge challenge for them, and one that looks a difficult one on paper.

USA Boast Impressive Record

The head-to-head record is very much in the USA’s favour, as they have won 19 of the previous 24 meetings. The USA has never lost against El Salvador, and have won five of the previous six matches between the sides,

The overall record between the sides highlights how big of a challenge this is for El Salvador. It’s unlikely that they will get an historic win, which means the preference is for a comfortable 3-0 win for the American side.
