The reigning world champions return to action on Thursday evening as they look to build on a dominant start to World Cup qualification. Lionel Messi and co. will have home field advantage when they take on Chile, who have been among the most underwhelming performers across their opening six qualifiers.

Before Betting On Argentina vs Chile

It has been business as usual for Argentina on the field so far this year, as they have built on their 2022 World Cup success by successfully defending their Copa America title. The South American giants won all but one of their matches in the tournament in the U.S. this summer, but they needed extra-time to eventually see off Colombia in the final in Miami.

Argentina’s record this year has been extremely dominant, as they have won all but one of their ten international matches. They have also made a classy start to World Cup qualification after winning five of their six matches, with their only loss coming on home soil against Uruguay. However, they quickly responded to that defeat with a win in Brazil at the end of November.

Chile have failed to qualify for each of the last two editions of the World Cup since reaching the round of 16 for the second straight edition in 2014. The South American nation recorded just five wins in 18 matches in the previous qualifying round, conceding a staggering 26 goals in the process. Furthermore, they netted just 19 times, which was their fewest tally since qualifying for the 2006 World Cup.

Their form over the last 12 months has been largely inconsistent to say the least, and they will be aiming to bounce back after failing to make it out of the group in the Copa America this summer. Over their last ten internationals, Chile have recorded just two wins, and they come into this qualifier after suffering a 1-0 loss against Argentina in the Copa America.

Argentina have avoided defeat in their last seven matches against Chile, recording victories by a one-goal margin in each of the last two. We could see that trend being maintained in this qualifier on Thursday, with the reigning world champions preferred to land maximum points.
