The Yankees (80-58) had lost four of five games heading into Monday’s series opener with the Rangers, but they bounced back nicely with an 8-4 win in Arlington. That victory helped give New York a 1/2 a game lead over Baltimore in the AL East, a margin they hope to improve upon against Texas (65-73) on Tuesday night in a game that isn’t as high priced on NY as one might think. Is a trap game coming?

Before Betting on September 3 Yankees vs Rangers

New York has agonized bettors lately, losing two of three as huge favorites in Washington last week and dropping the series at home against St. Louis over the weekend including a 14-7 defeat on Sunday. The Yankees did look good on Monday night in Arlington though, taking a 7-1 lead into the top of the 7th before finishing off the Rangers 8-4. Gleyber Torres had a 3-5 night from the leadoff spot and every New York batter except Austin Wells got a hit.

The Yankees were big favorites behind Gerrit Cole in the opener, and he delivered with 6.0 IP of 1 ER ball before leaving at the start of the 7th after experiencing cramping in his leg. Carlos Rodon (14-9, 4.31) takes the mound for New York in game two, trying to rebound from a couple of rough recent road starts. Rodon allowed 5ER in 5.2 IP against Washington last Wednesday and was tagged for 4ER in just 3.1 IP in Detroit on August 17 which has the left-hander with a 5.27 ERA on the road this year compared to 3.08 back at home.

Despite Monday’s loss the Rangers are 5-2 over their last 7 which shows they are still playing hard even though their playoff probability is 0.3%. Texas used only two pitchers in the game one defeat, getting 5.0 IP from Jack Leiter, Jr. before Chase Anderson went the last 4.0 IP. Texas should have a fresh bullpen for Tuesday night, but starter Andrew Heaney (4-13, 3.95 ERA) hopes they won’t be needed. Heaney’s W/L numbers are horrible on the year, but the left-hander allowed 1ER or less in three of his five starts last month.

September 3 Yankees vs Rangers Prediction & Pick

The numbers say take the Rangers in this spot. It’s hard to go against New York as they try fight for first place in the AL East, but Texas has been playing well lately and Rodon has been getting rocked on the road.
