Race Preview
The Triple Crown in 2026 draws to a close on June 6, as the âTest of Championsâ is set for Saratoga. A high-quality field will go to post for this yearâs Belmont Stakes, with a number of the runners from the Kentucky Derby making their return in New York after bypassing the Preakness Stakes last month.
Cherie DeVaux will have her sights on more history, as the trainer could become the first female to win two legs of the Triple Crown. Golden Tempo was an impressive rallying winner of the Kentucky Derby at the start of May, ultimately beating Renegade by a neck. This step up in distance should suit his chances, but he is unlikely to benefit from a speed collapse again.
It could be argued that Renegade was the best horse in the Derby, battling from an unfavorable draw to be beaten by a neck. The three-year-old by Into Mischief has won twice from three starts this year, and was impressive when landing the G1 Arkansas Derby. A deserving post-time favorite.
Chief Wallabee was one of the hard luck stories in the Derby, finishing fourth after being bumped on multiple occasions. The Constitution colt is one that will be favored by this step up in distance, having made his moves in the G1 Florida Derby and G2 Fountain of Youth too late. Commandment holds the form edge on those lines, but the colt needs to bounce back following a disappointing effort at Churchill Downs.
Emerging Market shouldnât be overlooked after finishing tenth on his third career start in the Derby. The Chad Brown runner would have learned a lot from that experience, and the Candy Ride colt holds a form edge over the re-opposing Powershift.
Belmont Stakes Picks
I always think that the best three-year-old tends to win the Belmont Stakes, which makes Renegade very interesting this weekend. The three-year-old for Todd Pletcher was a very unlucky loser in the Kentucky Derby, and the decision to save the colt for this final Triple Crown race could be rewarded at Saratoga on Saturday.
