Griffin Jax had been decent during his transition to the starting rotation until his last start against the Tigers in which he gave up 6 earned runs in 4 innings. For the season, he's made 18 appearances and 7 starts. Overall, he's got a -0.5 bWAR and a 4.76 ERA. In 34 innings, he's surrendered 34 hits and 18 earned runs, walking 16 and striking out 32.
At the plate, Yandy Diaz has a .326 average and a .933 OPS with 11 homers. Junior Caminero has 14 homers and an .887 OPS. Jonathan Aranda has an .845 OPS with 11 homers.
Against Alcantara, Cedric Mullins is 5 for 14 with 2 homers. Diaz is 4 for 16 with 4 singles. Aranda is 1 for 6 with a single. Caminero is 1 for 3 with a single. Richie Palacios is 2 for 3 with 2 singles. Chandler Simpson is 2 for 5 with 2 singles. Taylor Walls is 1 for 4 with a single.
Early in the season, Sandy Alcantara looked like he'd regained his Cy Young Award form. A healthy Alcantara would give the Marlins myriad options as the trade deadline approaches, with the opportunity to get a big package of prospects for him from a contender. However, he's struggled lately.
Although he pitched well against the Nationals on June 1, allowing 3 earned runs and 7 hits in 7 innings, his previous two starts were horrific. Against the Braves and Blue Jays, he allowed 14 earned runs in 11.2 innings, losing both games.
For the season, he has a 4.59 ERA. In 82.1 innings, he's allowed 6 hits and 42 earned runs, walking 21 ad striking out 57.
At the plate for Miami, Liam Hicks has 12 homers and an .815 OPS. Xavier Edwards is having an All-Star season with a .306 average, 6 homers, and 10 stolen bases in 13 tries. Otto Lopez is batting .333 with an .831 OPS.
For the Marlins against Rays starter Griffin Jax, Christopher Morel is 1 for 2 with a triple. Kyle Stowers is 0 for 1 with a strikeout. Connor Norby is 0 for 2 with 2 K's.
Ordinarily, this would look like a pitching mismatch between Jax and Alcantara. But Alcantara has not pitched well and he's not striking out many hitters. The Rays are a team that will take advantage of his shortcomings compared to what he was before.
Neither team is a juggernaut at the plate, but the Rays seemingly find ways to win that other teams don't. For this matchup, Tampa will take the rubber game of the series and knock Alcantara around.
