Yamal, Rodri, and a Midfield Built to Suffocate

Spain won Euro 2024 and haven't stopped since. Lamine Yamal is 18 years old and already operating as one of the most dangerous wide forwards in world football, combining with Nico Williams down the flanks to give Spain one-on-one threats that full-backs at every level struggle to contain. Rodri won the 2024 Ballon d'Or and anchors a midfield that also includes Pedri, Gavi, Martín Zubimendi, and Fabián Ruiz. Five midfielders. All regulars in the Champions League. All capable of controlling a game from the first whistle.

Luis de la Fuente runs a system that wants the ball, moves it quickly, and creates through the half-spaces Yamal and Williams vacate when they drive inside. Saudi Arabia beat Argentina at the last World Cup. Spain will know that. It won't change how they play, but it means they won't take this lightly either.

Al-Dawsari Carries Saudi Arabia's Hopes

Salem Al-Dawsari is 34, carries 108 caps, and is the most decorated player in Saudi football history. He scored the winner against Argentina in 2022, a moment that still defines the program. He won the AFC Player of the Year award twice, most recently in 2025 after scoring 15 goals and registering 15 assists in a single season for Al-Hilal. The captain sets the tone and, on his best day, can punish any defence on the counter.

The problem for Georgios Donis (appointed just seven weeks before the tournament after Hervé Renard was sacked) is that 25 of the 26 Saudi players compete in the Roshn Saudi League. Saud Abdulhamid at Lens is the lone European-based selection. The gap in technical exposure between this squad and Spain's is significant. Firas Al-Buraikan scored five goals in AFC qualifying and leads the attack, but feeding him against Cubarsí, Laporte, and the rest of La Roja's defensive unit is a different challenge altogether. Saudi Arabia's best outcome is an Al-Dawsari moment in transition. Spain's best outcome is a comfortable 90 minutes. The odds reflect which is more likely.

Spain vs. Saudi Arabia Pick

Rodri controls the tempo. Yamal and Williams create in wide areas. Saudi Arabia's domestic-heavy squad faces a midfield they haven't seen at this level. Al-Dawsari can inspire moments but can't carry 90 minutes against this Spain side alone. La Roja win. We're backing Spain -500.
