Early Has Been One of Boston's Better Stories This Season

Connelly Early is 5-3 with a 3.26 ERA. The 24-year-old left-hander has settled in as Boston's most reliable arm this year, the kind of pitcher who doesn't miss bats in big numbers but also doesn't give games away. He threw seven shutout innings against this same Atlanta lineup ten days ago; his command has been the story more than his stuff.

Early has faced the Yankees twice in his career, including a Wild Card start last October where he held New York to three runs in 3.2 innings before getting pulled. He's a better pitcher now. Still, the matchup inside this ballpark against this lineup is difficult. The Red Sox have lost seven of ten and rank near the bottom of the American League in road offense. Isiah Kiner-Falefa and Ceddanne Rafaela give Boston two contact hitters who can start rallies, but the lineup has not been generating consistent run support this year.

Schlittler Is the Best Pitcher in This Game

Cam Schlittler is 7-3 with a 1.89 ERA. He came off his worst start of the season last Tuesday — four earned runs in 4.1 innings against Cleveland — but that outing is the outlier in a season that otherwise reads like a Cy Young campaign. He has allowed one earned run or fewer in nine of his thirteen starts. He has not had back-to-back bad starts all year.

Against Boston specifically, Schlittler owns a 2-0 career record. He shut down this Red Sox lineup for eight innings in last October's Wild Card clincher, then went to Fenway in April and won again. The Yankees are 37-26 and own the second-best home record in the American League. Ben Rice leads the lineup in OPS; Jasson Dominguez has provided a lift since Stanton went to the IL. The offense doesn't need to do much when Schlittler is right.

Red Sox vs Yankees Pick

Schlittler against a team he's beaten twice, in a ballpark where the Yankees are 20-11. Last Tuesday was rough; the six starts before it weren't. New York gets the pitching edge and the home edge in the same game.

Lay it. Yankees.
