New York Hopes Rodon Can Build on His Last Start
The Yankees have won 4 straight. In the first game of their series in Sacramento against the Athletics, they start lefty Carlos Rodon. Rodon struggled in his first two starts returning from offseason elbow surgery, he gave up 5 earned runs in 8 innings. Against the Blue Jays in his last start, he was much better, allowing 1 run and 3 hits in 5 innings.
Overall, he has a 4.15 ERA, has surrendered 8 hits and 6 earned runs in 13 innings, walked 11, and struck out 17.
Ben Rice, Aaron Judge, and Cody Bellinger are carrying the team offensively. They're getting by with it as several key performers struggle, but eventually Jazz Chisholm, Trent Grisham, and Austin Wells need to provide something offensively.
For the Bombers against their ex-teammate Luis Severino, Chisholm is 5 for 11 with a double and 2 homers. Paul Goldschmidt is 2 for 5 with a double and a home run. Judge is 4 for 8 with a double and a home run. Amed Rosario is 3 for 16 with a home run. Anthony Volpe is 2 for 5 with 2 singles. Bellinger is 4 for 12 with a double.
Severino Has Been Reiable for the A's in 2026
The Athletics are hovering around .500 and close to 1st place in the mediocre AL West. Severino was signed before last season to be a veteran anchor and he's generally been what they expected. This season, he has a 4.23 ERA in 61.2 innings. He's had three poor starts which boosted his ERA, but he's been predominantly reliable.
In those 61.2 innings, he's allowed 58 hits and 29 earned runs, walking 31 and striking out 64. Severino came up with the Yankees and was expected to be a Bronx linchpin, but he never achieved the lofty expectations despite some excellent seasons in pinstripes.
The A's hit for power. Shea Langeliers has 13 homers and a .912 OPS. Nich Kurtz has 8 homers and leads MLB in walks and on-base percentage at .430. Carlos Cortes has a .952 OPS and 5 homers. Slugger Brent Rooker is having a poor year with a .626 OPS and 7 homers. They are without shortstop Jacob Wilson and 3rd baseman Max Muncy, both on the injured list.
For the A's against Carlos Rodon, Rooker is 1 for 12 with a home run. Langeliers is 4 for 8 with a double. Lawrence Butler is 1 for 6 with a single. Jeff McNeil is 0 for 4. Kurtz is 0 for 3 with 2 K's.
Yankees vs Athletics Pick
The Yankees are blazing hot and the A's are a middling team. However, Rodon is still finding his way in his fourth start of the year. He tends to lose the strike zone, which is something the A's won't let him get away with. And they hit a lot of home runs.
Severino will keep the Yankees in check and the A's will get to Rodon to take the win and break the Bombers' winning streak.
