Yankees Rookie Elmer Rodriguez Tries to Show Better Control
For the final game of the Yankees' series against the Mets, they send rookie Elmer Rodriguez to the hill. Rodriguez is a top pitching prospect, but has shown his inexperience in his 2 starts so far this season with control being his biggest problem.
Both of his starts were against the Rangers. In total, he's tossed 8.2 innings, allowed 10 hits, and 5 earned runs, walking 8 and striking out 5. Walks were an issue in the minors as well.
Ben Rice is back from his hand injury and hasn't missed a beat with an OPS just under 1.100. Aaron Judge is among the league leaders in home runs and has an OPS over 1.000. Jazz Chisholm is heating up. His average is finally above .220. Paul Goldschmidt has also been hitting better after a woeful start.
Against Mets starter Freddy Peralta, Cody Bellinger is 6 for 14 with a double and a home run. Chisholm is 2 for 10 with a double and a home run. Goldschmidt is 9 for 35 with 5 doubles and 2 homers. Judge is 0 for 3 with 2 K's. Anthony Volpe is 1 for 2 with a home run. Austin Wells is also 1 for 2 with a home run.
The Mets Hope to Continue Their Slow Turnaround Behind Peralta
Things keep getting worse for the Mets on the injury front. Their luck has been among the worst in MLB. They are already without catcher Francisco Alvarez for the next two months after knee surgery. Then Clay Holmes, having an All-Star season, suffered a broken fibula on a line drive on Friday against the Yankees.
Freddy Peralta was acquired to be their ace. He's pitched well. If Mets fans expected a pure ace, they were looking in the wrong place. Peralta amasses a high pitch count and can only be counted on to get into the 6th inning or so.
For the season, he's thrown 49.1 innings, allowed 41 hits and 17 earned runs, walking 19 and striking out 50.
Juan Soto is starting to heat up again. His OPS is approaching .870 and rising. Marcus Semien, Mark Vientos, Bo Bichette, and Brett Baty have shown flashes recently, but their batting averages are still in the .230s and below with intermittent power.
Obviously, the Mets have never faced Rodriguez.
Yankees vs Mets Pick
While the Yankees have handled Peralta well in the past, Rodriguez is a rookie and this is a pressure-filled game, given that it's against the crosstown rival Mets and there is significant citywide attention being paid to it.
The Mets will be patient with Rodriguez and put up some runs against him.
Peralta will hold down the Bombers to get the Mets the win in the 3rd game of the series.
