The two stars have been involved in a war of words in the build-up to the showdown, with Lopez teasing that his opponent has reached the top of the sport without coming up against a single credible opponent.

Lopez comes into the bout after winning 21 of his 22 professional fights, with 13 of his victories being scored by knockout. However, he has looked more professional in his recent bouts after scoring decision wins against Steve Claggett, Jamaine Ortiz, and Josh Taylor in the light welterweight division.

Barboza is one of the more interesting outsiders on the New York card in May. The California native has won all 32 of his professional fights, but he is still regarded as the seventh-best light welterweight by The Ring.

Momentum certainly appears to be on his side, as he has dominated his previous bouts to reach the top of the light welterweight division. He should also have a fitness advantage after landing a split-decision win over Jack Catterall in Manchester in the middle of February.
