Jack Flaherty Tries To Bring It Home for the Dodgers
In Game 1, Jack Flaherty pitched reasonably well logging 5.1 innings, surrendering 5 hits and 2 earned runs. The home run Giancarlo Stanton hit against him could (half-jokingly) have landed on the moon.
Freddie Freeman continued his scorching streak in Game 4 by homering in his fourth straight game. Historically, the Dodgers first baseman has hit Yankees starter Gerrit Cole very well.
The Dodgers tried to squeak by in Game 4 with a bullpen game, but it failed. Expect them to try to maximize the number of outs they get from Flaherty and turn to their top relievers, Brusdar Graterol, Michael Kopech, and Blake Treinen, to try to end the series.
Gerrit Cole’s Yankees Legacy Is on the Line
The Yankees got through Game 4 on the strength of Anthony Volpe’s grand slam. They now turn to ace Gerrit Cole to bring the series to 3-2.
Cole pitched brilliantly in Game 1 logging 6 innings, surrendering 4 hits and 1 run while striking out 4. He threw 88 pitches and should be rested and ready to go deep into Game 5, which Yankees manager Aaron Boone will undoubtedly ask him to do.
This type of game is where legacies are made. If Cole comes through in Game 5 and is needed in Game 7, again coming through bringing a long-awaited championship back to the Bronx, his spot in Yankees history will be secured. Against this Dodgers lineup, that’s a tall order.
On a positive note for New York, captain Aaron Judge went 1 for 3, drove in a run, and drew a walk in Game 4. He looked much better at the plate.
World Series Game 5 Prediction: The Run Total Is a Safer Bet Than Picking a Winner
This game hinges on Cole. The Dodgers will not hesitate to remove Flaherty if he doesn’t have it. The Yankees need to ride Cole even if that means letting him pitch with runners on base and the entire series hanging in the balance.
Given the variables and the reality that the series could end for the Yankees based on one or two mistakes by their ace, it’s preferable to bet on something that relies more on both teams’ performance: the run total. The over/under is 8 runs.
