Nuno Borges faces Daniil Medvedev in the US Open Round of 16. The Portuguese is an absolute underdog against the former champion, who’s been trying to gain some consistency in the previous few months.

Borges had three wins in Cincinnati before losing to Rune in the fourth round, and he then immediately suffered a defeat in Washington to Seyboth Wild. However, the No.34 in the ATP rankings has pulled himself together in New York, beating Cori and Kokkinakis in the opening two rounds without losing a set.
His previous event was more challenging. He faced Mensik and had to go through all five sets before eliminating the feisty Czech. Borges struggled with his first serve, posting only 57%, and he also had a negative winner/unforced error ratio of 49/55.
Medvedev opened the competition in New York with a win over Dusan Lajovic, 3-1, which was the only event in which the Russian lost a set. After that, he didn’t have major problems against Marozsan and Cobolli, who he beat 3-0.
Meda’s struggles with form were evident throughout the summer. After losing to Alcaraz in the Wimbledon semis, he didn’t do anything notable at the Paris Olympics, and afterward lost in the first rounds of both Montreal and Cinci.
