Frances Tiafoe was expected to reach this stage. Alexei Popyrin wasn’t. The Aussie was better than Novak in the previous round, making one of the biggest upsets of the tournament in the past decade.

Before Betting on Frances Tiafoe vs. Alexei Popyrin

It seems that Tiafoe targeted the form for this part of the year. After reaching the semis in Washington and the finals in Cincinnati, his trend of excellent performances extended to Flushing Meadows. He would beat Kovacevic in the opening round, 3-1, then Shevchenko in the next, 2-0, before an epic clash against Ben Shelton last night.

The two played four hours and five sets, with the more experienced Tiafoe winning. The reason? He was more composed, making 27 unforced errors, while Shelton made an astonishing 58. So, in general, his experience and ability to play under pressure decided here.

What can we say about Popyrin’s sensation? Yes, it was obvious that Novak wasn’t 100% ready for this tournament, and he did look deflated, but that can’t diminish the Aussie’s victory over the best tennis player ever. Simply, it can’t be because he beat him 3-1; it wasn’t a withdrawal or anything else.

Also, just to remind everyone, Popyrin won the Masters in Montreal. Therefore, he was in very good form even before coming to the Big Apple. Apart from losing the set to Novak, he defeated the other two opponents without problems, Kwon and Martinez, both 3-0.
