Time has been called on Erik ten Hag and his role at Man United. The Dutchman was sacked on Monday following yet another defeat against West Ham in the Premier League.

Ten Hag was appointed as United boss in April 2022, and has overseen domestic cup success after winning the EFL Cup in 2022-23 and the FA Cup last season.

However, league performances have continued to dip. Last season, United finished eighth, and there have been few signs of improvement in 2024-25.

United’s Poor Form Sees Ten Hag Sacked

Ten Hag was left fighting for his job on Sunday after the Red Devils suffered a late defeat against West Ham at the London Stadium.

The loss was United’s fourth in nine Premier League outings this term, leaving them sitting 14th in the standings. Goals have been in short supply this season, netting just eight times. Therefore, only Crystal Palace and Southampton have netted fewer than the Red Devils.

United’s tally of eleven points is the second-lowest in Premier League history after nine rounds of matches.

Van Nistelrooy Handed Interim Control

Former United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy has been promoted in the wake of ten Hag’s sacking. The 48-year-old will take charge of the team while the hierarchy approach potential full-time candidates.

Van Nistelrooy returned to Old Trafford as part of the backroom staff in the summer, turning down the managerial role at Burnley in order to take the position.

The former striker enjoyed a fine stay at PSV between May 2022 and May 2023. Van Nistelrooy led the Dutch club to the KNVB Cup, before parting company at the end of the 2022-23 season, citing lack of support for the reason of his resignation.

Van Nistelrooy is the leading contender to become the full-time manager at Old Trafford. However, significant moves in the market have seen Xavi Hernandez and Julian Nagelsmann cut in price.

Reports over the weekend claimed that Xavi had been in talks with the Red Devils. The former Barcelona star left the Catalonian club at the end of last season, and is reportedly open to take the role at Old Trafford.

Nagelsmann is an interesting mover. The current Germany national team boss is reportedly keen to return to club soccer, and talks could progress quickly if the former Bayern Munich boss is open to joining the Red Devils.

Gareth Southgate is also among the front-runners, but the former England boss has ruled out a return to management before at least next summer. Graham Potter and Michael Carrick are +800 and +2000, respectively. Meanwhile, Ruben Amorim is a +600 chance after doing an impressive job at Sporting Lisbon.

Man United take to the field for the first time following ten Hag’s departure on Wednesday when they host Leicester in the EFL Cup.
