The road to EURO 2024 gets underway this week, as the top nations look for maximum points in their qualifying groups. There will be an interesting showdown at Friends Arena in Stockholm, as the new era for Belgium gets underway with a testing match against Sweden.

Before Betting On Sweden vs Belgium

The Roberto Martinez era with Belgium came to a disappointing end at the World Cup, as the nation crashed out at the group stage in Qatar. Belgium picked up just one win from three matches in Group F, with their only success coming in the opening round against Canada. However, Domenico Tedesco is now tasked with leading the nation going forward, and that starts with a tricky fixture in Sweden.

Last year was a very disappointing year for Belgium, as they managed to record just five victories from 12 matches. During last year, they were also beaten on four occasions, with the standout losses coming against the Netherlands in the Nations League, and Morocco at the World Cup. There will be a fresh feel surrounding the team coming into this qualifying stage, with Eden Hazard announcing his retirement from international soccer.

Last year was also a year to forget for Sweden, as they managed to record just four wins from ten matches. There was also big disappointment that they wasn’t able to qualify for the World Cup, while defeats against Serbia, Norway, and Poland indicated how far their standards had slipped.

However, there is certainly a newfound confidence surrounding the team based on their previous outings, as they have gone five without defeat coming into this qualifier, and they have landed four straight victories. But, whether they have the quality to pose serious questions of Belgium remains to be seen.

This looks set to be a tricky first outing for Belgium under their new coach. However, we still expect them to battle to an opening three points in qualification, and we could see Romelu Lukaku getting on the scoresheet.
