This is the round where the buck usually stops for the San Francisco 49ers, who have lost to the Rams and the Eagles in the NFC Championship the last two seasons. S.F. hopes things change this year, as they are at home up against the upstart Detroit Lions who are making their first conference championship appearance since 1991.

Before Betting on Lions vs San Francisco

Detroit has looked good this postseason, edging out the red hot Rams 24-23 and then beating the Buccaneers 31-23 in a game that really didn’t even seem that close. The key so far has been QB Jared Goff, who has completed a whopping 74.3% of his passes these playoffs with 3 TDs against 0 INTs.

Goff is a California native who grew up on the West Coast as a 49ers fan, but that doesn’t mean he’s going to be sentimental on Sunday. The former Rams QB has plenty of weapons at his disposal as well with Amon-Ra St. Brown having 15 catches this postseason and stellar rookie TE Sam LaPorta adding 12. Fellow rookie Jahmir Gibbs also rattled off a 31-yard TD last week to seal the win over the Rams.

Even though the 49ers are TD favorites on the offshore odds, there are a lot of pundits calling this an upset game. A lot of this comes from the perception that Detroit has the QB advantage with the former #1 pick Goff going up against the last pick of the 2023 draft in SF quarterback Brock Purdy. Purdy only went 23/39 with 1 TD against Green Bay last week, and may have a banged up WR/RB Deebo Samuel (shoulder) so maybe the concerns are warranted.

2024 NFC Championship Lions vs San Francisco Prediction & Pick

The Lions have been playing with a lot of energy the last two weeks, but those games were also at Ford Field in front of the friendly fans. There should be a lot of Detroit backers traveling to the West Coast this week though, and the Lions were a solid 6-3 on the road this season which makes the +7 just too many points to be giving.

Pick: Lions +7
